Haas Residence Project Team Location Awards Designed for a local Aspen artist, the Haas Residence is an innovative solution to tight budgetary constraints and pragmatism in planning due to the site’s spatial limitations. At the request of Aspen’s Historical Preservation Commission, the existing pan-abode structure remains untouched on three sides and has a delicate four-foot wide bridge attaching it to the new construction on the rear elevation. The plan for the residence was heavily dictated by the site’s existing conditions: a shotgun lot housing a pan-abode structure registered on Aspen’s Historic Inventory and a cottonwood also deemed historic by the Aspen Parks Department. The planning concept created a courtyard linking the old and new construction while pushing the majority of the mass away from the existing pan-abode to leave as much of the cottonwood root system intact as possible. The massing separation also allowed the two volumes to read independently of their respective time periods.
